Farewell Matrics of 2001! There is a time-old tradition at Wynberg Girls' High: the final "teaching" day, 10 October in the year 2001, is one which is set aside for the Matriculants to dress up, to pay tribute to their teachers, and to celebrate the fact that they can, as the Grade Elevens (in all their wisdom and envy) advised them, "Hit the road Jack!" It is is time of high spirits, of tears of wonder and amazement. Equally predicable are the reactions of the pupils at their sister school: their younger sisters' eyes are invariably wide with wonder and their mouths aghast. The Matriculants, having thrown caution to the wind and careless of all except their youth, their joy and the fact that the road beckons, arrive in cars with hooters, and whistles, with whoops of delight and hysterical giggles. We present a few of our unruly 2001 bunch to you! There was fiction and fantasy... Elegance and entertainment... there are those who serve... all sorts of causes...
and those who defy classification. After a hasty breakfast in the Ballet Hall and a great deal of posing, and prancing and photographing, the Matrics took to the stage to thank and pay tribute to their respective teachers, leaving a single heroic Mum to pick up the pieces - before she went on to her own work! We call her the Lone Ranger! Weaving a wondrous web of events during which they, the "abandoned islanders," recalled how it was that they had attempted to extract, to learn from the wisdom of the sagacious, the judicious, the intelligent - they called upon the Matric teachers of 2001 and thanked them for their work... their patience... their expertise. This time the prefects sang to the school. This was followed by the traditional parting song to the matrics by the teachers. The Matrics of the year 2001 will not be forgotten in a hurry. We've enjoyed sharing our lives with them, and wish them joy and fulfilment as they move on to embrace a new phase of their lives. |
