Waterloo house - The Hostel

Life in the hostel is both pleasant and exciting. It is located on the school grounds, at the foot of Constantia Neck, surrounded by a tranquil garden inhabited by both squirrels and birds. The hostel can house approximately eighty girls from grades eight to grade twelve. The staff include the kitchen staff, who prepare three meals and two teas a day, four boardermistresses, two of whom come from overseas and change annually, three matrons and Mr and Mrs Cheney the "Hostel Parents".

Mrs Cheney is the hostel superintendent. She is in charge of the supervision of the girls as well as the hostel outings, which include the girls and the boys school functions as well as other activities and lives on the hostel premises

You have the option of either sharing or having a single bedroom. The rooms are quaint, wooden floored and fully furnished. The atmosphere of the hostel is lively, modern and upbeat. There is a sense of unity and familiarity amongst the girls. A sense of respect and seniority is instilled in the girls, thus creating an orderly family like unit.

There are two and half-hours of study on weekdays, with supper and a study break. The girls have a chance to watch their favourite television programmes in their spare time. The hostel encourages the study of music and this is allowed to be rehearsed during the study period. The hostel has a common room for the girls to relax, play the piano, have a game of pool or watch the television. During the summer the girls frequent the bathing area which is situated right next to the hostel. If not in the swimming mood one can play tennis or simply laze about basking in the sun.

The experiences in hostel are skills learnt for life; it teaches one how to relate to others, react to authority and to tolerate people. It is an experience second to none and not to be missed.
