Midmar Mile 2002 - Gail Bristow brings home gold

|
15 000 swimmers took to the water in what is now the World's largest open water swim, held
at the Midmar Dam near Pietermaritzburg, on Sunday 10 February.
Gail Bristow holds the record for the most number of swims, swimming this event for the
27th time. Gail, a former Springbok Breaststroke Swimmer, was placed 3rd in the senior
ladies' event, and won her own age group category. She swam the first Midmar Mile event in
1974 when only 157 swimmers took part, and when females were "unofficial."
This event has grown to include 6 different categories. Taking part in an event of this
magnitude is an exhilarating experience and with a cut off time of one hour is generating
enough for even the more social swimmers to be encouraged to take up the challenge.
