Training our Matric Leaders of 2006

After already having experienced a few weeks of roll call-taking, house card-checking and the daunting task of single-handedly trying to get your tutor group quiet and to stay while the messages are being read, the Matric Leaders' official day of preparation on Friday, 7 October arrived.

The sessions were held jointly by Mrs Paverd and Ms Alberts, and Mrs Harding, Mrs McEwen and Mr Burrell.

Mrs Harding talked to us about the fact that the Matric Leaders are the backbone of the school’s leadership system. Being closest to the ground, they have more influence and communication than any other position, including the teachers. Without them, the system, for all its modernity, simply would not work.
The success of the house rests on the shoulders of those who the school have chosen to carry the tutor groups through 2006.

On the other side if the coin, this job is what you make of it. If you simply do roll call every day for the year, all you will have contributed to the life of the school is an accurate absentee record. Everyday, you have the opportunity to influence. Two years of the new system have shown clearly that the Matric leader sets the tone of the class. We need to expand our role beyond the mere administrative tasks, and give the type of service to our class that no one can force us to.

This is one of the most difficult jobs of all, and we wish all matric leaders wisdom and discernment as they set their own parameters for their spheres of influence in the house - may you enjoy every success during the year.
