Sara-Jane Goldston

Nine months prior to her death, Sara had met the man of her dreams, Philip Nottingham. They had been commuting between Cape Town and Johannesburg for a couple of months, when Sara and Philip made the decision for her to pack up and relocate to Johannesburg, in order to spend more time together. She applied for a job at a travel agency in Johannesburg and had been appointed. In their short time together, they had enjoyed life to the full, traveling abroad, buying a house, adopting a dog called Layla, going to events, they were inseparable. Tragically Sara’s mother (also an alumnus) passed away in late 2003, leaving Sara, her two sisters Ruth and Ellen and their father, Ralph behind. This was a sad time for Sara, her father in Cape Town and sisters in New Zealand . The year seemed to just fly by and Sara met a lot of Philip’s friends and work colleagues, she crept into their hearts and was often spoken of as loving and caring, “the best thing that could have happened to Philip” who had also been through a rough year. Philip took Sara to PE over Christmas to meet the Nottingham family and also to visit her father in Cape Town. On New Year's Eve they were discussing how the past year had unfolded badly and how they looked forward to the New Year which could only hold better things. Tragically, on the morning of January 1, 2004 , Sara was suddenly taken from us in a motorcar accident together with Chalice Nottingham, sister to the love of her life Philip Nottingham, and a dog belonging to Chalice.

She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

This poem which was given to Mr. Nottingham by Ellen Selkon (his sister) at Sara’s funeral.

MISS ME - BUT LET ME GO

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room
Why cry for a soul set free

Miss me a little - but not for too long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me - but let me go

For this is the journey that we must take
And each must go alone
It's all a step in the Master's plan
A step on the road to home

When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me - but let me go.
