A public holiday is usually seen by scholars as a day to sleep in and relax; but this was not the casefor the Wynberg squash team. Very early this Woman's Day, 9 August, we headed off to the 17th annual Topschools Squash Tournament in Pretoria, hosted by Pretoria Boys' High School. This year, being Pretoria Boys' Centenary Year, we made history by participating in the only event of the Centenary Festival to include girls! well
...the
shopping malls in Pretoria, where we purchased our team mascot, Wighis(WGHS) Shotdot
Wiggles II. (Wighis I was murdered by Wynberg Boy's last year!) Because
each school represents the best in their province, we faced tough competition. The degree
of toughness was immediately put to the test by our having to play the defending
Topschool, Brandwag first. Next, we played Eunice, another school containing top-ranked
South African players. Needless to say, our already fragile expectations we swiftly
shattered, and that evening our sore muscles needed serious attention! On
Saturday, stiff but still high-spirited we had challenging and close games with DSG
Grahamstown and Paarl Vallei, with Arendene, Tracey and Nicole finding time in-between to
do some talent scouting and watch some boys (Interhouse Rugby was being played). In the
evening the Formal Dinner was held where each school is seated with the boys'/girls'
school of their province: we sat with Rondebosch. This proved extremely entertaining as
the MC identified the 'Bosch Boys the main suspects of the 'midnight streak' through the
campus the previous night! (Their embarrassment seemed only to confirm the suspicion!) We
awoke early on Sunday morning and I think all our thoughts were encapsulated by the first
comment from her Natalie's room: "Guys, I don't think I can move!" We played our
last match against Rhodene, and everyone gave of their absolute best: Mariette won her
match, and Nicole and Arendene's went to five sets. Disappointed, but content with our
effort, we settled for 8th place
in the whole country we reminded ourselves! We
watched the endless Boys Final in awe and exhausting admiration. Before
heading to the airport, we made one last stop at McDonalds (where we had become familiar
faces!), and spent a few hours at the mall. On the trip back to Jo'burg, Mrs Fourie had to
hear us perform our 'tour song': "Build me up Buttercup", one last time. (We had
been given the name Buttercups because of the colour of our tracksuits!) Once
again, Topschools was a fun and memorable tournament, from which we returned safely,
tired, happy and most importantly, toned! Tricia Main |
