This year’s National Girls Schools Sports and Cultural Festival was hosted by Collegiate High School for Girls in Port Elizabeth and took place in the first week of the holidays, from 1-5 April. On the 1st of April, the day after break-up day (when we were all supposed to be sleeping late), our dedicated sportswomen and their coaches gathered outside school, at the bus, ready to sacrifice sleep and comfort in order to represent their school. We arrived in PE later that day and made ourselves at home at the Beacon Lodge – home for the next few days. The festival was officially declared to have begun at the opening ceremony on the morning of Friday the 2nd, where we were all given a warm welcome by Collegiate’s orchestra and dancers. And a few short hours later, the matches started. We sent our netball, chess, tennis, debating and hockey teams, so Wynberg was represented in all but the squash tournament. And of the nineteen schools participating, we were in 7th place for netball, 6th for both tennis and hockey, 3rd for chess and 1st for debating! After the closing ceremony on the Sunday, the Boardwalk was overrun with a group of tired, but happy girls in bright yellow t-shirts, celebrating their successes and the fact that their holidays would soon begin.
