| A 19 year old journalism student and
part-time model from Coniston Park is organising a beauty pageant witha difference. Tanyan
Jameza Hendricks, known to her family and friends as TJ, is inviting other girls to
participate in a Miss South Peninsula competition with 20 percent of the proceeds going to
the Nazareth House Children's Home.
The entrants will also be required to attend a series of workshops on AIDS and will be
judged on the night on their ability to answer questions about the affect of the disease
on society.
TJ said she chose Nazareth House as her charity because she had worked there as a
volunteer in grades 10 and 11 when she attended WYNBERG GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL.
"I was so touched by the plight of the AIDS babies that I decided I had to do
something about it," she said. "I have a modelling background and know that
young girls are particularly at risk. Our parents haven't done enough to educate us about
the disease and we should not make the |
same mistake, so I decided to
include the AIDS awareness programme as an integral part of the competition," said
TJ.TJ's mother, Gail Hendricks, is a health promotion Officer with the SPM and will be
leading the workshops. TJ, who studied journalism at Rhodes last year, took a year out
from her degree because she couldn't afford to pay the fees. Some of the proceeds from the
pageant will go towards helping her to enrol again next year.
In addition she has a swimwear modelling contract in
America which she will do after a cultural exchange programme which starts in June,
including a "special needs camp" which she feels will equip her to continue with
her voluntary work back in South Africa.
Girls between the age of 6 and 12 and young
women from 13 to 21 may enter the Miss South Peninsula competition. The finals will be
held at 8pm at St Anne's Hall,Ortchestra Street,Steenberg on Sunday April 30. Call TJ at
701 6735 to register.
