Definitely Afloat

by Andrew Roberts

I was pleasantly surprised when I met three local girls about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. Saskia Kemp and Amy Nel (both 16) and Kim Nel (14) will make history when they become the youngest SA female sailors to crew the sailing event of the new millennium. On the 8th January 2000, the girls will leave Cape Town on a 3 650 nautical mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean, competing in the MTN Cape to Rio 2000 race.

Saskia will be gone for a couple of months with her dad, and will have to catch up on her school work upon her return to Cape Town (now that's something to look forward to.) Fortunately, she has access to e-mail on board and will be able to keep in touch with her friends. This energetic girl has a good deal of sailing experience and is quite at home aboard the yacht.

Kim and Amy Nel will be crewing Scorpio along with their dad, mom and even Tammy, their cat. Once the race is over, the whole family is off to the Caribbean Islands, and then, well, wherever the winds take them. For these two adventure seekers, their schooling will have to be taken along, and they will write exams by means of home-schooling. When asked about boyfriends being left behind, all three faces dropped and I realised that that was a bad question - sorry girls.

We at BLUSH wish them all success with their journey, and look forward to seeing them all back home one day, but in the mean time - have fun and stay dry!
