TERM 3 #9
September 2005

Dear Parents

New beginnings

A school is a place where we celebrate new beginnings at different times. Mostly, the school year is seen to begin in January and this is true of the academic side of school life. However, the beginning of next term is the start for the new set of senior learners as the Matrics take their leave and the new leaders are inducted and take office.

A time of new beginnings is a good time to take stock, to reflect on what has passed and to plan for what is to come. The leaders of 2005 have done us proud and have consolidated and strengthened the pillars, houses and tutor groups. Our new leaders now begin with their goals, ever seeking ways to enhance the reputation of Wynberg and to involve more learners in the myriad of opportunities which are available.

This time of year is also when we celebrate spring and watch for new buds of life on trees and for the unfurling of the petals on the spring flowers. At Wynberg, we hope to unlock this new beginning in all our learners. Not only in the Grade 11's as they take their place as role models and leaders of our school, but in every learner who wants to make a new start. This is the beginning of the new summer sports season which means it's time for the girls to get involved, to challenge themselves to join something they have not tried before, to make a new beginning and a new investment in themselves.

Remember: “The indispensable first step to getting the thing you want out of life is this: Decide what you want”. Ben Stein

THANK YOU, GRADE 8’S

Remember the knitting competition the Grade 8's had at the end of the second term ? The final product was delivered to Rev. Jannie de Bruin's at Josini, Makatini, Natal, during the July holiday. The blanket was given to a poor family and they were very, very happy and thankful!

Thank you Grade 8’s.

MONKEY FILMS INVADES WYNBERG

Last week we were informed that the cardboard cut-out stage looking like something from “The Sound of Music” which we had as a backdrop to our assembly, was in fact the set belonging to an advertising company which would be filming at our school. The girls began to smarten up, hoping to be caught on camera, but no such luck!

Monkey Films had chosen our school hall as premises for filming an advert for children’s antacid. (Why children would need antacid is another issue!). It took the format of a junior school production involving over 60 children dressed as ballerinas, pirates, fairies, monsters and other odd creatures.

The filming involved enormous trucks and other alien vehicles invading our school. For three days trailers and catering gazebos were positioned on the Girls’ Junior field.Security guards patrolled he area, and a sea of cars en-veloped the front lawn. Amazingly, with all the hustle and hype, we hardly knew they were there!

BISHOPS ONE-ACT PLAY FESTIVAL

Written and directed by Tarryn Saunders and Berenice Bentel, “Orpheus in the Undergrowth” is an emotionally complex play about two sisters (Michelle Botha and Hannah Molyneux) reunited by the death of their father. Orpheus, the mysterious statue coaxes them to dig up memories of their younger selves (Romi Reinecke, Kathryn Luyt and Kirstin Eloff). The pieces of their dark past begin to fit together and the family nears the brink of destruction.

Actors were borrowed from Wynberg Boys’ High to play Orpheus (Michael Klein) and the father (Richard Mandy).Stage Managers were Lynn-Leigh Brandt and Erin Thomas, and the tech crew, Bryony Leach and Glensia Dausas.

PEER GUIDES

This term has marked the ushering in of the new group of peer guides at Wynberg Girls’ High. They have recently been handed their badges and certificates, and taken their pledge in a special assembly. The new team of 18 have the task of counseling their peers in the school.

Almost straight away they were involved in a workshop for Grade 7’s from WGJS in order to calm their fears about high school and give them a few tips on what to expect.

Grade 10 Dance

Zia, Nandi, Tamsyn, and Vuvu looking beautiful and ready for action !

Well done to the Grade 11 boarders who organised a special evening for the Grade 10’s, an event to remember. Café Rojo was noisy but vibrant, with plenty of dancing: all had loads of fun. A tasty menu was prepared: prawn cubes as a starter, fish tagliatelle with salad as the main course, and decadent chocolate cake topped with a fudge sauce to follow.

Flower girls: Kebone, Zethu & Ondela

Hout Bay Outing

The first of the wonderful Cape summer weather presented itself last Sunday and the boarders took advantage by popping over the hill(s) to Hout Bay. Some of the girls swam and then enjoyed fish and chips from “Fish on the Rocks”. Ice –cream was the desert enjoyed on the way home. And the only reason for the outing ? FOOD!

WRITERS’ WORKSHOP

‘Between the Lines’ held a writers’ workshop in Ms Orpen’s classroom recently. Course facilitator was Mandy Lebides and she led the group to write some wonderful Haikus - see the creative writing section of the next school magazine. Here they are in contemplative, concentrated mode!

PROVINCIAL DEBATING TOURNAMENT 2005

Tournament, the Debating Society was invited to attend the Provincial Debating Tournament from 2-4 September. Representing Wynberg were Cally Galloway, Nandi Ganda, Raelene Adams and Sheree Lang.

We debated in the five preliminary rounds against RBHS, Islamia College, Westerford, Siphumelela B and Fazeka High School. The motions were on a variety of topics, from “Performance enhancing drugs being legalised in sport” to “Civil disobedience is legitimate when government fails to deliver”.

After excellent performances in these debates, Wynberg qualified for the semi-finals. In this debate, Wynberg proposed the motion “Incest should be legalised” against Bishops. Wynberg provided a clear and concise argument but the debate was awarded to Bishops. This meant that Wynberg ranked 4th overall and received the title of the top girls’ school in the Western Cape. All of our speakers were ranked amongst the Top 20 speakers of the tournament, with Sheree Lang achieving 6th position overall, the top female speaker. Shot, Sheree!

Based on their performance at Provincials, Cally Galloway, Nandi Ganda, Raelene Adams and Sheree Lang were all invited to the Provincial Selection Trials which took place on Sunday 11 September. Anja Hendricks was also invited to attend. Trials consisted of three formal debates where all speakers were placed in positions they were not accustomed to and debated on teams with learners from other schools.

After a tiring day filled with motions, definitions, clashes, positive matter and rebuttal, four Wynberg Girls were selected for the Western Cape Debating Team.

They will participate in the National Debating Champs in Grahamstown in December.

Congratulations to Nandi Ganda, Anja Hendricks, Raelene Adams and Sheree Lang for this outstanding achievement.

SCIENCE EXPO

WGHS recently took part in the Science Expo at UCT, entering five very topical projects. Meeka Tulleken (in photo with Mrs van Graan) did well to secure a bronze medal for her project on the town planning of low cost housin

XHOSA SOCIETY
Because of the Matric exams, the Xhosa Society girls who performed at SACS had to rehearse in any space they could find. It paid off, though, as they were undoubtedly stole the show !

WEEKEND IN GREYTON

Beautiful, peaceful, breathtaking, quiet, picturesque - these are a few words I would use to describe Greyton after spending a weekend there with the mountain club. We stayed at the Uitkyk Primary School hostel and enjoyed waking up to beautiful mountain sunrises and views, and fresh air, and ringing church bells.

On Saturday afternoon we went for a hike in the nature reserve where we saw stunning scenery: a view of the village, waterfalls, rivers, beautiful fynbos and magnificent mountains. Some of us hired bikes and explored the village with pedal power. We had a wonderful evening of fun whilst playing 30-seconds and braaing under the clear, starlit sky.

On Sunday we went for a short walk in the nature reserve and then enjoyed exploring the village with its gravel roads shaded by oak trees, browsing local artists galleries, restaurants and craft shops. Sadly, we eventually had to leave the village, but we did so feeling relaxed and refreshed.

1st Hockey Team report

On Saturday 3 September, the WGHS 1st hockey team played their final league match, against DF Malan on the UCT Astroturf. After a hard-fought 60 minutes they had beaten their opponents, scoring 4 goals to 1. This final victory secured them the top spot in the Girls’ Premier League.

In League games, the Wynberg 1st team has been undefeated for the past 2 years. This year alone, they scored a grand total of 68 goals and only had 6 scored against them.

Congratulations to Candice Manuel, Nicole Mullins and Illse Davids for being the top goal scorers for the season, and to Micaela Paterson and the rest of the defence for keeping them out.

Right now they are off on a 10-day tour to Argentina where they will be playing matches against [and hopefully running circles around] some of the schools there. We wish them all the very best of luck - may all their hard work, dedication and passion for the game motivate and inspire them to give only of their best.

U19 Girls Interschools Hockey Tournament

On Saturday 10 September, the U19 Girls’ Schools’ interschools hockey tournament was held at Hartleyvale. This involved: Wynberg, Rustenburg, St Cyprians, Springfield, Herschel and Sans Souci. Each game was 20 minutes one way and was started and ended with a hooter. In each match there was intense pressure on the players to score within the allocated 20 minutes.

Wynberg drew their matches against Springfield and Rustenburg, but as the tournament progressed so did Wynberg’s enthusiasm and will to win.

The most anticipated match was the one between Herschel and Wynberg. The old rivals both played strongly to win the match. In the end Herschel proved too strong but Wynberg’s spirits were not crushed. They bounced back from their defeat by beating St.Cyprians 4-0 and Sans Souci 6-0. Good passes resulted in well-deserved goals.

The tournament ended with celebratory speeches congratulating the girls for their efforts and for a wonderful morning of hockey. Although Herschel won the trophy, Wynberg now have their eyes set on Argentina!

DÉJEUNER DANS LA CLASSE DE FRANÇAIS

The Grade 10 French learners contributed to the making of a salade niçoise for their lunch on Tuesday. Onto a "base" of lettuce leaves were piled boiled potatoes in a vinaigrette dressing (Madame T) , then green beans, slightly boiled and dressed. Then tuna, bright red tomatoes, hard-boiled egg and black olives. We transformed the Group Room into a bistro with a bright provençal tablecloth, dark green serviettes, bread and a good appetite! We ended with a salade de fraises(strawberries) and chantilly cream.

Which goes to prove that there is more to French than irregular verbs and nouns that are masculine or feminine with a logic of their own!

MUSIC REPORT TERM 3

The Music Department has experienced a short, yet condensed 3rd term. It began with the Campus of Schools’ Baxter Concert. This event, always a highlight on the music calendar, was an enriching experience for all the performers, more so because of the interaction with musicians from WBHS and the junior schools. This enjoyment was reflected in the concert which, although lengthy, was enjoyed by all.

Guitarists from Girls' High

There were two lunchtime concerts: one show-casing our award-wining recorder ensemble and the other the soulful sounds of our matric jazz duo.The performances of the choir and orchestra at the Founders Day rounded off our appearances for the term.

During the term certain pupils were given time off school to do their UNISA music exams. Girls from a variety of grades and levels of expertise participated and are now anxiously awaiting their results.

Although the term is drawing to an end, the music department is certainly not taking a break. Ensembles are furiously rehearsing for the Valedictory Service and the Matric Prize-Giving, and the Trinity College of Music exams take place next term.

Finally, our last internal music concert for the year will be held on the 18 October. The exciting new project for the concert is: IMPROVISATION. The music girls are being allowed the space to create a piece which is truly original. The Music Department extends a warm invitation to the Wynberg Family to attend this concert.

Raelene Adams

WGHS ROCK & CONTEMPORARY BAND

Ms Bauer and her drum pupils have started a small musical ensemble to represent Wynberg. They will play some contemporary Rock, Pop and Funk that is simple, fun and accessible, The repertoire will comprise the covers of bands like Maroon 5, Jamiroquai, Norah Jones and Interpol, and the aim is to perform at various school functions and possibly have gigs outside of school or at other high schools. At a later stage, more members such as backing- singers and guitarists might join the group.

The Rock Band can be heard and seen at the following events next term: prize-giving. assembly, and especially the Wynberg Music Evening @ the Music concert on 18 October 2005.
See you there!

Fortunate Miya doing vocals, Ms Lisa Bauer on piano, Nichole Groener on rhythm guitar, Justine Taylor on bass guitar, and Julie Hosking on drums.

SQUASH INTERSCHOOLS

The Wynberg squash girls recently took part in the annual girls’ schools’ squash tournament. The team played very well, and achieved the following results: they drew with Herschel and Rustenburg, and beat St Cyprians and Springfield. Although they drew with eventual winners, Herschel, and were otherwise unbeaten, Herschel ended up in first spot, having won more games along the way! Congratulations to Michelle Fourie who won all her matches, and to the team for doing so well and playing with such commitment. Special thanks to Mrs Nel, Ms Fourie and Mr Bodenstein for their excellent coaching and support.
