TERM I #3
March 2005

Dear Parents

We seem to have come to the end of the first term at a rapid pace. Much has been achieved and much is still to come! One of the most exciting additions to the school was the purchase of an interactive white board which has been installed in Ms McCarthy’s classroom. Those girls who have been lucky enough to use it have voted it a marvelous technological advance and those teachers who have been brave enough to try it have voted it a wonderful teaching tool. This is definitely the way of the future!

Some of our sports and cultural teams are off to Potchefstroom during the holidays to participate in the Girls Schools’ Festival and we wish them the best of luck and hope that they and their teachers have a most enjoyable time. We appreciate that their holiday has been cut short but they will be acting as ambassadors for Wynberg and we know that they will do us proud.

Once again our Arts Festival was most successful and we thank all those who spent many hours rehearsing, organizing and producing wonderful performances for varied audiences. A special thank you must go to the Parents’ Association for organizing the variety of stalls and for raising funds for those “extras” that make our school the special establishment it is!

I should like to thank the staff for their support and hope that they all have a relaxing few days and come back refreshed and ready for a long second term!

I wish you all a happy holiday with your families and do travel safely!

Sincerely
Mrs P McEwen
WATERLOO HOUSE

One of the main aims of the hostel this year was to get the girls out and about doing things. On weekends there have been many voluntary activities organised in which some of the more enthusiastic girls have been keen to get involved.

For the early birds there was a pre-breakfast walk on the Liesbeeck River, or for everyone else a Sunday afternoon game of Rounders (the British version of softball, complimentary of the English exchange students!). Girls also had the opportunity to go and watch the UCT 1st cricket team on Sundays, a couple went to the Waterfront to watch an Inter Schools’ rowing regatta and on Sunday 13 March 3 supportive ‘hostellers’ were taken up to watch the ‘Argus’ Cycle Tour riders and cheer on Jean van Rensburg as she completed it; Congratulations Jean!! For the more indoor types, a trip to Cavendish was arranged for a days ten-pin bowling, where apparently the fun made up for the sore arms the next day!!!! Everyone realises just how important boy/girl interaction is when growing up. This is something we are very aware of at Waterloo House, and whilst thegirls are learning and studying in a single gender atmosphere, we try and involve them in as many ‘organised’ social events as possible. So far this term the girls have attended the Rondebosch Social, where fun was had by all, and the Rondebosch Valentines ‘Cupid evening,’ where the Bosch 2005 Matrics put on a show.

The Girls also created some entertainment of their own when the year 11s organised a Valentine's evening and show with the Wynberg Boys in the Waterloo courtyard, which proved very successful. They also joined forces with the Wynberg Boys in a Swimming gala at Newlands swimming pool, and showed magnificent school spirit in their support. One Saturday afternoon some of the girls also went along to check out the talent at Bishops where the school held an annual fete. We are currently working on involving the Wynberg Boys in social swims and spirit builders, a good goal for next term!

CONGRATS!

Miss Glover is soon to become Mrs Faure and we wish Penny and Greg all the happiness and love in their future together.

CANDY FOR CANCER CHALLENGE

On Tuesday 8 March, Ms McCarthy, Tracy-Leigh Genricks and Bronwyn Nussey attended a meeting of the Rotary Club of Constantia to hand over the sweets to the camp organiser, Rotarian Dannie Kagan.

MATRIC HIKE 2005 GROOT WINTERHOEK
“Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife (yeah man!)
I mean the bare necessities
Old Mother Nature’s recipes
That brings the bare necessities of life.”

This was the theme song of the Matric Hike from the 4th to the 6th of March – sung shakily throughout the hike by the ten girls who endured it!

The first night was spent cooking dinner – namely Maggi two-minute noodles (in an exciting range of flavours stretching from chicken to beef) – and then sleeping bags were yanked out of backpacks and everyone snuggled together to stargaze. Chatter and rather raucous laughter continued way into
the night, and Mr. Lord seemed to derive a great thrill from telling us about the so-called ‘Cape vampire bats’ which supposedly inhabited the areaand visited at night!

GRADE 11 CAMP

On Wednesday the 16th of February the grade 11’s of ‘05 made their way to Rocklands Camp in Simonstown. The girls were unsure whether their time at Rocklands centre would enhance their leadership skills – but once we arrived and got settled in we knew that this camp would provide us with the necessary skills and bring the grade closer together as a group.

Over the next three days we learned about etiquette, conflict, resolution, reaching our goals, job interviews and our favourite stress management. Surprisingly these talks were not completely boring and we managed to stay awake through most of the sessions.

Enthusiastic participants at the Grade Eleven Camp

The entertainment included various skits and playing “Who wants to be a chocolatenairre”(Mr. Lord’s idea). The view, swimming pool and trampoline were enjoyed by all. The delicious camp food ensured that we felt right at home. All in all the camp was a huge success.

CAREERS EVENING

On Thursday 10th of March the Grade 11 and 12 learners were given the opportunity to attend the Wynberg Campus of Schools’ Careers Evening, to learn all they needed to know about career options. The two Life Skills departments joined forces to provide the girls with a multitude of relevant exhibitions, as well as speakers from a wide variety of university faculties. Career counsellors were also on site to discuss individual career options.

The ballet and gym halls were filled with interactive exhibitions, and many a pupil was to be seen wandering around with an awed expression and a hefty stack of colourful brochures. Information talks were conducted in venues throughout the school, and the choice of speakers was exemplary. The long list of dynamic speakers were wisely divided into faculties rather than specific careers, making for a far more broad and inclusive spectrum of choices for the learners.

The turnout really was commendable. There were the Stellenbosch, Cape Town and Western Cape Universities, the Varsity, Northlink, Montrose Business, False Bay, Cape Town Fashion Design and Cape Audio Colleges, and a multitude of other respected institutions. Representatives from GAP and Camp Counsellors USA also gave of their time. From the culinary arts to computer training, Digital Media to Make-up Issue, the organisers rose to the challenge of providing a host of options as diverse as our student body.

Warm congratulations and thanks go to Ms J. Paverd, Mr M.Galant, and the many others who strove to make this evening possible. Yet another way in which Wynberg pulls out all the stops to guide and mould us for the lifestyle of our choosing!

GATSBY EVENING

If you were anywhere near Wynberg Girls' High between 18:30 and 20:30 on 16 March, you might have been forgiven for thinking that you had slipped back into a former era!

There were a number of very gorgeous gals and guys who were celebrating the roaring twenties in Gatsby style. Organised by the Grade Elevens, who are studying the novel, The Great Gatsby, they held a party in which they began to explore just some of the life which Fitzgerald satirised so powerfully in his novel.

The Grade Elevens did not just hold the party to gorge on a delicious dinner and drink those divine cocktails: part of the evening's entertainment included musical items, dramatic excerpts from the novel, historical information on both the period and the Fitzgeralds and dance from the era.

The evening culminated in everybody's learning to do the Charleston, but there were some unforgettable professionally choreographed rendings of that most famous dance by Carol Shapiro's Dance girls. Perhaps equally unforgettable, was a less professional rendering of "The Black Bottom" by some lesser known dancers!

INTERACT

On Tuesday 15 March 2005 Interact held their Trivial Pursuit evening.

The evening was divided into 8 rounds, each with its own category. With the teams ready for action the game was started, Entertainment being the first topic up for discussion. The Stars (aka The Teachers) and The Sheep took an early lead showing their good general knowledge on the various TV programmes and Hollywood Gossip. Even though the History and Science categories did take their toll on some teams, The Stars ended up on top followed by Novem and in third place 4 R of the M F (Four representatives of the Mellon Family).

The evening was a great success and all funds raised will go towards a Fun Day for the children of Dietrich Moravian Primary School in Philippe. A very big thank you to our sponsors: Butlers Pizza and Cell C, Mr Hayes for running the fun filled evening and especially to everyone who came.

CULTURE
The Cultural Pillar has enjoyed a term filled with outings, functions and above all, growth.

The Pillar is made up of 18 different societies: Band, Between the Lines, Capstone, Chess, Choir, Dance, Debating, Drama, Flute Ensemble, Human Rights Society, Marimba Band, MSA, Orchestra, Pipe Band, Recorder Ensemble, Vocal Ensemble, Wynpress and Xhosa Society. Furthermore it is made up of amazingly talented girls!

WGHS made a block booking to see Joseph and his techni-coloured Dream Coat. Many girls made use of this opportunity and were privileged enough to watch this performance. A block booking was also made for Maynardville’s annual production. This year was a production based on Shakespeare’s comedy “Much ado about nothing”, which is being studied by all Grade 10 girls. The evening, under the stars, was enjoyed by all.

The Cultural Pillar also played a major role in Open day. The Cultural Pillar usually puts on a Road Show for Grade 7’s to introduce them to the Pillar. This year’s Road show was a unique experience. Sheree Lang and Taryn Saunders wrote a play based on “Alice in Wonderland”. In the play, Alice (played by Berenice Bentel) is a Grade 7 learner who is not sure where she fits in the vast Cultural Pillar. Her journey through Wonderland is one of self discovery, where she gets introduced to all the societies in our Wynberg Wonderland.
The play was a fusion of all different societies. Performances were made by the Choir, Dance Department, Marimba Band, Matric Drama Group, Orchestra and Xhosa Society. Main parts were played by a variety of talented girls. The Road Show fostered a spint of unity between the very different societies in the Pillar and reflected the wonderful talents held by our Wynberg Girls. Open Day was also an opportunity for potential Wynberg Girls to speak to the different Leaders about their societies. Each society had displays which acted as an effective way to introduce their societies.

A Cultural Period also occurred this term in which Msr Green spoke to our girls about advertising. Mrs Green is an expert in her field worldwide and imparted her knowledge to us. This was not only an interesting discussion, but an educational one as well.

Other events that took place this term were the Gatsby evening, Kirstenbosch and our Arts Festival. Kirstenbosch is an event in which the Music Department perform a variety of different pieces. Our Arts Festival is the major Cultural highlight of the year. This is always a showcase of the skills of our energized youth. A creative combination of styles & periods and a colourful explosion of art, dance, drama and music. Term 1 also saw the implementation of a Cultural Co-ordinating Council, which is made up of heads of societies. This has become a forum for discussing Cultural issues.

The Cultural Pillar has experienced a term filled with growth, development and integration. I would like to thank all those who have made and continue to make significant contributions to the Cultural Pillar – it has not gone unnoticed. If anyone else would like to form part of the Pillar – join a Society TODAY!

Sheree Lang

STAFF CHANGES
Sadly we say goodbye to Mrs Nikki Gerhardi, though we haven’t lost her just yet, she will continue to teach her Matric class till the end of the year.
In the meantime, Ms Tina Damstra will move across to the Computer Department and Rene Pearce will take over in the Natural Sciences.
CULTURAL FESTIVAL
By the time you get this, we would just have celebrated our annual Arts and Food Festival. While a full report of the event will be put onto the website, and will be published in the first newsletter next term, we would like to extend a huge vote of thanks to all of those who were involved.
MUSIC

The music department has welcomed a group of Grade 8s that are not only talented, but enthusiastic as well. It has also experienced minor teaching changes with more specialist teachers being brought in to teach specific instruments. The practical benefits can already be heard, literally!

Along with the new group of subject music girls, music as an extra-mural too has grown. The choir has grown to impressive proportions and the introduction of a ‘B’ band only goes to show how popular these groups are becoming.

The music department played a very important role in our Cultural Roadshow through performig both solo and choir songs and having the orchestra play. Other performances include the Gatsby Evening, Kirstenbosch Plant Sale and the prestigious Arts Festival. The music department is really “all systems go!”
Another interesting development in the department is the grouping and co-operation between different musical societies. For example, the Xhosa Society, Marimbas and Choir all came together for an electric fusion of sounds.

The initial response to such fusion was great enthusiasm. Ways of grouping and sharing resources are constantly being looked at. With such growth, the music department is looking forward to a very exciting future!

We scored 29 goals in 6 matches and only concede 7, beating Westerford 8-1 to win the League title!. Top goalscorer for the season was Illse Davids, with Nicole Mullins and Kelly Croxford close behind. The 4th side also had a superb season remaining unbeaten to win their league. They scored 39 goals in only 5 matches!! Well done to all the girls who scored these goals!!

CRICKET

Wynberg vs Bergvliet
DATE: 28 February 2005
AMMUNITION: Carolyn Jones Melissa Abrahams
....and it’s another 6 from Jones !!

On 28 February, the Wynberg cricket side thrashed Bergvliet by 10 wickets. Wynberg dismissed their opponents for 39 runs and then reached 42/0 inside 4 overs to win convincingly. Melissa Abrahams bowled well to take 4 for 11 while Carolyn Jones hammered an unbeaten 35 runs which included five 4’s and two 6’s to wrap up the match in double quick time.

Wynberg vs Plumstead
DATE: 1 March 2005:
AMMUNITION: Carolyn Jones Candice Manuel Elana Solomon Stacey Gedult

After hitting 13 runs in the first over, we knew that we were going to set a grand total against our rivals Plumstead. Both Carolyn and Candice swung the willow freely, hittings 4's at random and charging up and down the pitch, adding runs to the fast growing tally. 73 after 10 overs and we were looking to post a huge score. The first wicket fell after an opening partnership of 97, 1 run short of Candice Manuel's half century. Elana Solomon then joined Captain Carolyn Jones to add a further 45 runs. The final total was 143/1 after 20 overs.

Elana continued from where she left off last week, taking the first wicket in her first over, bowling one of the opening batswoman for a duck. This excellent bowling was followed by an awesome team effort in the field with Stacey Gedult taking a catch even Jonty Rhodes would have been proud of. Another catch by Ingrid Coulter ensured that Plumstead would always be on the backfoot. At one stage they were 19/3. Most notable of the bowlers were Elana, who took 4 wickets, and Candice Manuel who took 3 wickets in 4 overs. This included one maiden and only 4 runs.

Another tremendous victory (98 runs) by the Wynberg XI ensures their semi-final berth in the WP Knock-out tournament.
Watch out Pinelands, you are next!

Ms M Edwards

SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING

From the 3rd to the 6th of March, some of the Wynberg Synchro girls took part in the South African High Schools Competition. We did extremely well, with Tiffany Lovemore, Caitlyn Manners- Wood and Jenna Thomson coming second in their trio. We had a really awesome weekend. Our team, Western Cape came fourth overall! Back at school, we are all busy practising our self- choreographed trios, which we will be performing in our own competition on Friday 18 March!

We would also like to congratulate Jenna and Emma who were selected for the SA 13-15 Team and will be competing in Greece in August.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE GIRLS

WATERPOLO

The water polo teams have enjoyed a very busy and successful 2004/2005 summer season . We welcomed a new coach of the 1st and 2nd teams, Grant Mackenzie, to Wynberg . Grant has proved to be very popular with the girls and has put a lot of energy into his coaching. We were also very fortunate to persuade Kelly Bevan, past captain of WGHS 1st team, to take over at short notice from Arendene Fourie, who has coached the u16s for the past few seasons.

The new u 14 squad of Grade 8s, captained by Katya Buratovich, included many very promising young players who just love being in the water. This is a most enthusiastic team, who played their hearts out in the recent interschools’ qualifying tournament.

The u16s , captained by Meeka Tulleken, continued their fine form, playing excellent water polo in their fixtures and the qualifying tournament, making it through to Newlands for the finals of the Morelli Trophy. In the semi-finals they beat Westerford and then followed that win up with a win against Herschel, proving that we really do have “The Greatest u16 Waterpolo Team.”

The u19s have enjoyed good, competitive water polo this summer and have gained tremendous experience under coach Grant Mackenzie. 1st team captain, Carolyn Jones and 2nd team captain, Bronwyn Nussey have been enthusiastic leaders and good role models and together with the other matrics, have always found much enjoyment in the game. We hope that they all manage to continue playing this exciting game after matric.
WGHS were well represented in the WP sides at the interprovincial tournaments in December. The Anderson twins, Kirsten and Robyn, then were selected to represent WP at the under 16 tournament in Bloemfontein in February.

Congratulations to all the players for their achievements and for a water polo season played in such good spirit.

Mr P Bodenstein
