TERM 2 #7
August 2004
Dear Parents
We are exceptionally proud of the leaders of 2004 who, with great success, have led the school into the new form of leadership. We are now at the start of the process which will give us a new group of girls, willing to take on the challenges of leadership and be part of the history of Wynberg. We trust that every part of this process - speaking to the school, compiling motivations and
manifestos and being interviewed - will add to the wealth of life skills with which these girls will eventually leave Wynberg.
Wynberg is currently in its 120th year and the Old Girls’ Union has started a drive to gather the contact details of as many of our past pupils as possible, as a move towards a grand 125th celebration in 2009. A young team of “Old Girls” are actively at work through the SAreunited website and all other available means to make contact with Wynberg girls from the past.
Please, if you are a past pupil, or if you have contact with any past pupil, make contact with WOGU by
emailing the school (principal@wynghs.co.za) or by registering with SAreunited (www.sareunited.com).
As for this year, we would love to see all past pupils at our Founders’ Day cocktail party in the tuck shop on Thursday 9 September at 18:00 for 18:30, or at the Founders’ Day events at school on Friday 10 September from 10:30. Please RSVP to the school office for catering purposes.
Warm regards
Shirley Harding

FAREWELL, MRS FOWKES

It was with sadness that we said goodbye to our friend and colleague, Mrs Alison Fowkes, at the end of July. Mrs Fowkes really made her mark at Wynberg, teaching both Home Economics and Technology. She was also very involved in the computer room in the afternoons and was often seen pounding the tarmac with the cross-country girls. Each year Mrs Fowkes helped tirelessly with raising funds for and organising the matric dance. This year she was also appointed head of Apsley house in the new house structure at Wynberg.
Mrs Fowkes is one who enjoys new challenges so I have no doubt that she will do well in her new school in Auckland, New Zealand, teaching Food Technology . Especially as she is lucky enough to have her own personal assistant and a school laptop!
We will all miss her keen sense of humour and her non-judgemental, positive outlook on life. In spite of having a hectic schedule, somehow Mrs Fowkes always found time to help others. We look forward to hearing good things about her new life down south and will keep you up to date in the newsletters.

| MATRIC DANCE 2004

For the first time, the dance was held on a Friday and despite their excitement, the Matrics presented themselves at school in their brown uniforms on the morning of 23 July, and gave the appearance of attending classes. However, it was clear far more pressing issues were at stake: the weather, the hair, the dress, the nails, the partner . . .
Eventually they were released from their anguish and with whoops and yelps and much excitement they fled the school for their manicures, pedicures, make-overs, fittings and photo-shoots. Then the dash to the limosine, (or mum's taxi, dad's taxi, boyfriend's car, boyfriend's dad's car) to arrive, transformed, at Cape Sun Holiday Inn.
Here the teachers, Matrics and their partners gathered in the foyer for a fruit cocktail before they entered the ballroom which had been beautifully decorated for the occasion. Romance and roses were the order of the day. The Matrics, these most elegant and glamorous girls, visited friends and teachers at other tables, admired each other’s spectacular outfits and partners. And the snapping of photos, photos, photos all the way!
Mrs Wilding opened the proceedings by welcoming the Matrics and their partners to the dance, Rebecca spoke wittily and warmly, and the evening began to whizz by. All too soon, it was over, and is now a wonderful memory sustained by many, many beautiful photographs. |
THE PILLAR AWARDS
Once again it was time to honour the girls in the school who had most contributed towards the four pillars in the school : Athena (Academic), Demeter (Service), Discobolus (Sport) and Orpheus (Culture). In a special assembly, these awards were presented to : Rebecca Blundell (Athena), Michelle Fourie (Demeter), Tara Notcutt (Orpheus), and Ilse Davids (Discobolus).
ATHENA :
Rebecca Blundell was awarded this trophy for excelling in academics in various fields while continuing to participate in all spheres of school life as well as holding a leadership position in the school.
DISCOLOLUS :
Ilse Davids has excelled at her chosen sport, hockey and reached the pinnacle - South African colours. Only hard work, determination and commitment to her sport has made this all possible. She is at the moment representing South Africa in Uruguay.
DEMETER :
Michelle Fourie gives tirelessly of her time in many of the different areas of service. Many of her breaks and afternoons are devoted to these activities. Always reliable and trustworthy, she has demonstrated a real commitment to the school and these activities.
ORPHEUS :
Tara Notcutt has been involved in all Open Days, Arts Festivals and every single Major Production since arriving at WGHS in Grade 8. In addition, as Press Officer for the school, she has submitted numerous articles to the local press, and in every instance, she has been given a by-line (her name, and the name of the school have been published with the article). In doing this she has brought honour and recognition to both herself and to the school. |
INTERACT
The third term brings an end to the Interact year and it is time to say goodbye to our matric members and thank them for their contribution.
Special thanks to the Matric committee members, Ellie Shortall, Jessica Riviera, Gillian Lupton-Smith, Aiggy Shen and Colleen Louw, who put much time and effort into making our projects such a success - we will miss them.
Our three Grade 11 committee members, Lauren Bird, Farrah Hayes and Bronwyn Nussey, have proven to be motivated and enthusiastic members of our team. Each, in her own way, has demonstrated that she has the qualities and skills to take over and run the society. As such, for the first time ever, three individuals will share the Presidency. Well done, girls.

Committee of 2005
They will be joined on the committee by Gadija Hayat, Jessica Cross, Robyn Mann and Tessa Hittler. This new committee has already been hard at work planning new exciting projects and Interactors can look forward to action-packed interaction in 2004/5. |
H O U S E P L A Y S
On the last day of term, Wynberg girls were treated to a cultural boost as they watched the three house plays selected to be presented to them. The theme put to the Grade 11 directors was METAMORPHOSIS, and on Wednesday morning, Cavanagh, Copenhagen, and Kirsten house presented their plays to the rest of the school.
CAVANAGH
Directors: Ashleigh Badham-Thornhill & Lucia Bugane Cavanagh’s play is based on the metamorphosis of our country, South Africa, inspired by the country’s celebration of ten years of democracy. The red people and white people unite to form Cavanagh, the pink people, people of unity, peace and happiness ! With poems by Christopher van Dyk and Magoleng wa Selepe, performances by Alicia Back, Widaad Albertus, Kelly Henry, Aqueela Haron and our other wonderful actresses and dancers, this was something not to be missed.
COPENHAGEN
Directors: Romy Shortall and Catherine Cameron-Dow
The Copenhagen play was built around the theme of "Metamorphosis of the Human Mind on Drugs". The performers used various poems (including ones they wrote), published articles, singing and dancing, to illustrate this theme. The performance took one on an in-depth journey into the mind of a drug addict and showed how metamorphosis can happen.
KIRSTEN
Directors: Angela Lewis and Sibs Matiyela
The Kirsten play, Black Butterfly, tells the story of how an introverted young girl attending a dance academy realises her dream of becoming a professional dancer. Through poetry, dance and music, we see her realising how much potential she truly has and how she is metamorphosized into an amazingly talented butterfly.
The performances were judged by Victoria Bartlett, a highly accomplished actress herself. After a great morning’s entertainment, Ms Bartlett announced that Copenhagen had won, and the Best Performer title was shared between Shoena Innes of Copenhagen, and Rayvonne Mars of Kirsten. She also made special mention of Jenna Pelser, also of Copenhagen, for her choreography. |
MATRIC GALA MUSIC CONCERT
Inspired by Ms Opperman, the Music Department arranged a Matric Gala Concert this year. It was a sophisticated, elegant and wonderfully entertaining evening. The audience sat at tables and consumed delicious snacks and drinks as they listened to Matrics play wonderful music.
The candle-lit hall was transformed and filled with the strains of exquisite music. From Handel to Faure and Rodgers to Rutter, the sounds were varied and the performances virtuoso.
Instruments included voice, saxophone, piano, flute and violin. All of the students played very well, but the performance given by Andrea de Jongh must be singled out: it was exceptional.
It was clear at the end of the evening that the audience did not want to leave. Calling for an encore, the audience was delighted as Andrea played for us again. It was a wonderful evening - thank you to all
concerned

WYNBERG CAMPUS of SCHOOLS BAXTER CONCERT
Sold out ! Every producer and performer loves these words. Playing to a packed house - what could be more exciting ! And what a wonderfully entertaining and exciting evening it was ! Despite the torrential rain and reports of the floods in Cape Town, it was worth braving the elements to attend this concert.
Having graduated from the school halls of the Wynberg Campus to the Concert Hall of the BaxterTheatre, performers from the four schools showed their audience that they were more than ready to take their talents to Cape Town. The varied programme of wonderful music included delights from the choirs of each of the schools ranging from
The Wonderful thing about Tiggers, to From a Distance, to
Smoke Gets in your Eyes; individual performer, Andrea de Jongh from WGHS astounded audiences with her interpretation of
Goyescas (Granados); the WGHS Marimba Band and Matric Ballet girls wowed the audiences in a whirl of ethinic rhythm, colour and energy; the Concert Band from WBHS hugely enjoyed themselves while providing us with sounds such as the
Highlights from Cats and the Music of James Bond and highlights from
The Music Man. The Wynberg Schools’ Band provided a climax to the evening with their rousing rendition of the theme song from Jag
and The March King by Sousa.
The pleasure all derived from the evening’s entertainment was tangible as performers and audience made their way from the Baxter Concert Hall. Congratulations to all the music teachers and their amazingly gifted students. This was a
must-do-again- next-year occasion. Please book the Baxter now! |
OLYMPICS @ WYNBERG
On Thursday, 29 July, Wynberg Girls' High gathered together for an exciting assembly to pay tribute to an Olympian - our very own head of Sport, Michelle Edwards. All of us were filled with enormous pride as we sent her on her way to the Olympics of 2004.
Mr Burrell paid tribute to Ms Edwards, the best badminton player in South Africa, willing to go ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’ in pursuit of her dream. During the opening ceremony on TV, he advised school viewers to look for the girl in green and gold, grinning from ear to ear, talking on one cell phone and taking photos with another. We agreed with his description of Ms Edwards as being “someone we are all very proud of. She is very modest, exceptionally dedicated to her sport and prepared to make sacrifices to reach her goals.”
Mrs Harding then presented Ms Edwards with Wynberg Girls’ High School’s highest honour, the Golden Lion award. The criteria for this award cover excellence in a particular field and it is awarded to someone whose attitude towards the school and whose character best displays the qualities of our motto “Honour before Honours”. We warmly applauded her words : “Ms Edwards, Michelle, we wish you well as you travel to and play in the most prestigious sports competition in the world. We know that you will do yourself, Wynberg, and South Africa proud.”
To quote one of the slides shown during the assembly, ‘Look out, Athens ! Here comes trouble ! |

DEBATING
Rhodes High School was invited to debate against us at the beginning of this term and once again Wynberg Girls’ (Sheree Lang, Anja Hendricks and Raelene Adams) presented succinct arguments and conclusive rebuttal to win the debate, convincing the audience that the state should allow prisoners to be involved in public work schemes.
This week Christine Friest is running a first speaker workshop, and next week there will be another debate in Room 6. All are welcome.
CHESS
Our chess team (Alana Heynes, Trish-Lynn Reilly, Kirsten Helleman and Maxine Harkness) played Zwaanswyk this week and narrowly missed a win.
On Friday Alana Heynes, Ingrid Coulter, Trish Lynn Riley and Kirsten Hellemann proved that girls can play chess! They won two of their games at Muizenberg High. Congratulations to Trish- Lynn and Alana. (Alana’s opponent looked suspiciously like a surfer, but it was a tough match nonetheless with Alana taking his king after a grueling one and a half hours.)
The chess team is extending an invitation to all those who wish to participate in The Rotary Chess Programme. This takes place on fridays in the Life skills Room and the purpose is to learn about chess and to assist learners from other schools. |
NOG 'N SPRINGBOK !
Ilse Davids will NOT be playing for the 1st hockey team on Saturday - this, in spite of the fact that she was an integral part of the WP U-18 team which made it to the final of the Inter Provincial Tournament held in July in Cape Town. So, if she is such a good player, what’s the story ?
The good news, no, the great news, is that Ilse WILL be playing hockey but instead of the brown and gold, she will be wearing the Green and Gold ! Yes, after IPT Ilse was selected into the South African U18 Hockey team and she will be representing South Africa on their tour to Uruguay - teaching those South Americans a thing or two about hockey, we hope.
We at WGHS are very, very proud of her and hope she has a great tour !
GOLF
Michelle Greeff has been in the golfing news again as she spent the holidays playing in various C-division competitions. Firstly, Michelle came 9th in the SA Junior Championships, 6th in the Westlake Junior Club Champs and, most thrillingly, 1st in the WP Junior Foundation Championships.
Even more exciting is that she is the first girl ever to win this event. Well done, Michelle ! Girl power wins again!
