| Meeting with MEC,
Helen Zille
Looking at the impact of the Norms and Standards Bill on our school
On Monday night a combined meeting of the Wynberg Schools was
held at Wynberg Girls' High with the MEC of Education, Helen Zille, her adviser, Clive
Roos and Brian Gilbert, Acting Director of Education in the Western Cape.
The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the implications of funding and the Norms
and Standards Bill. Various issues involving education in the future were discussed. It
was a very informative meeting, and we are deeply appreciative of the time given to us by
people of this calibre.

ENOWNED AUTHOR, MARGUERITE POLAND VISITS WYNBERG GIRLS HIGH
Once again we have invited guest author, Marguerite Poland, to address our pupils this
year. Her moving and inspiring novel, Shades, is prescribed for the Grade Twelves
this year, and she has expressed willingness to spend time answering the questions of our
students and talking to them on Thursday, 16 September from 15:00 to 16:30.
Not only is she a wonderful writer, she is an
excellent speaker. Our students are fortunate to have this opportunity. Matriculants from
Westerford and Springfield convent will be joining us on this occasion.

a splendid show called Nautical Rhythms. The show will be presented at 20:00 on
Tuesday, 14 September and Wednesday, 15 September. Book your tickets through the school
before it is too late. Tickets are R20 for students and R25 for adults.

"Don't
Do Drugs"
Steve Hamilton at Wynberg
We were delighted to host a production by Steve Hamilton last Wednesday, warning our
students of the dangers of drug taking and the consequences of drug addiction.
It was a performance well received by our girls. If they are to be informed and
responsible members of the community, it is essential that they keep track of developments
in this area. We believe that this sort of education goes a long way towards alerting them
to the tricks of this particularly nasty trade.
§
"Music Recital - 1999"
The Western Cape Education Department, in an effort to
recognise the diverse and extraordinary talents of the Grade Twelve students this year, is
hosting a Music Recital at the Nassau Centre at Groote Schuur High School on Tuesday, 14
September at 19:30. If you missed the concert held at Wynberg recently to pay tribute to
the work of our students, don't miss this one. While not all of our candidates will be
performing, you are certain to enjoy listening to the mellifluous strains of the broader
Cape Town region.

Founders' Day
On 17 September we are celebrating Founders' Day. If you are a past pupil, why not join
the school for a formal assembly in the Main Hall at 11:00 followed by a tea with the
staff members immediately afterwards? Simply phone the secretary, Mrs Stieger, at 797 4163
to let us know that you will be joining us.
If you are fighting fit, and rearing to go, why not play Hockey or Netball for the
Wynberg Old Girls' teams? In this regard phone the school to speak to Andi Bernstein if
you believe that you can put present pupils through their paces. Alternatively, e-mail us
at oldgirls@wynghs.co.za
Hockey matches start at 12:00 on the Astroturf
HOCKEY: WGJS vs WGHS; WGHS vs Old Girls
NETBALL: Boarders vs Day Girls; WGJS vs WGHS; Old Girls vs WGHS - Netball
If you would prefer a less formal occasion to join us, why not spend a couple
of hours with us at a Cheese and Wine on the same day, in the Main Hall from 18:00 to
20:00? We would love to see you there. Phone
the school to let us know that you'll be there.
§
Appeal for Founders' Day
We are appealing to the parents of the Grade Eleven students to assist us by providing
a plate of eats for our Founders Day tea on Friday, 17 September. If you are able to
do so please contact the school at 797 4163. Alternatively, e-mail us at prinsloo@wynghs.co.za. Your assistance will be
greatly appreciated.

1996 Matriculants
Celebrate
The 1996 Matriculants recently had a reunion at the Hockey
Clubhouse in the form of a cocktail party. It was wonderful seeing the people who had been
so much part of our lives three short years ago. It is occasions like this that prompt us
to urge the current students to join the Wynberg Old Girls' Union. While we would not be
doing our jobs properly if our students were not ready (if not eager) to leave school by
this time, it is sadly often only upon leaving something that one begins to appreciate
fully just how much was given. And it is at reunions, such as the cocktail party held by
the 1996 group, that an acknowledgement and celebration of that fact can be enjoyed with
those fellow travellers.

A LEVEL UPDATE
The A level June examination results are out and
teachers are generally very pleased with them.
Special mention must be made of Gemma Patten, who achieved 87% and 82% for Mathematics
Modules 2 and 3. These results were obtained in spite of the fact that she was writing her
Matric June examinations at the same time. We do extend our commendation to her.
Other good results achieved by Wynberg Girls' High School students include:
Katherine Newling who obtained 67% and 66% for Biology Modules 2 and 3
Jacqui Newling, who achieved 78% for Mathematics 2 and 71% for Chemistry 2
Karen Jennings who obtained 70% for English 3
Natalie Burls who obtained 81% for Chemistry 2.
We wish them well as they begin preparing for the next set of examinations.
Book Sales
Texts for the year 2000
We are conscious that our girls have had some difficulties with the ordering and
purchasing of the prescribed books this year. In an effort to alleviate some of the
difficulties we have had in the past, we have thought of inviting the book suppliers onto
the campus itself to sell new stock to the students.
However, since we also deal with large numbers of second hand books, we wondered if
there were any parents who might be willing to draw up a database of available stock to
run a second hand bookstall (of prescribed texts) for the school. Perhaps it could be
administered along the lines of our second hand clothing exchange.
If you are in a position to help us, or would enjoy organising and running such an
exchange, please would you contact the school to give us your name?
