...now is that the start of a Mexican wave or not?

Cape Times

Pupils from six schools in Wynberg linked hands, hearts and eyes during a "peace chain" demonstration yesterday.

Motorists and residents of the Wynberg area sounded their hooters and shouted words of encouragement as the estimated 4 500 school children, holding peace placards, formed a snaking chain several hundred metres long.

The peace chain, an initiative of Springfield Convent which celebrated its 129th birthday yesterday, was aimed at promoting peace in society and showing solidarity against all forms of violence.

Springfield Convent teacher Sue joint said: "The year 2000 is a Jubilee Year in the Catholic Church and the Pope has made a special call for peace in the world."

Joint said the peace effort had received a tremendous response from passing cars and local residents.

A Wynberg resident, who did not want to be identified, said the peace chain was a wonderful idea. "We spend lot of time pointing fingers at each other instead of getting down to the bottom of things," she said.
