The Grade Eight orientation, planned and organised by Jenny McCallum, included a number of activities aimed at enabling them to get to know each other, to bond as a group and to familiarise themselves with the new systems in the High School. These activities included Mini Olympics, Swimming, all kinds of sports activities, a Scavenger Hunt on the Wynberg sportsfields and Action Cricket and Netball at the Stadium-on Main.
For the more senior students there is a tea to which they and their parents are invited. The purpose of this to welcome them to the school, to meet their area heads, the senior staff of the school and to provide them with an overview of the kinds of extracurricula programmes offered. New staff were formally welcomed to the school by Shirley Harding and the chairman of the Governing Body, Dr Shortall, at a cocktail party held especially for them on the first Friday of the term. Whatever form this welcome usually takes, it is generally a wonderfully relaxed evening where the governing body members, staff and their partners can meet each other. Shirley Cartmel, tuckshop convener and superb caterer for numerous functions thoughout the year, provided the snacks to ease us into our weekend. Groups of people gathered to laugh, to chat and to celebrate new beginnings. Thus began another academic year which promises to be a great one at Wynberg. |
