The Grade Eleven Camp
The purpose of the Grade Eleven Camp is to prepare the grade for leadership. This year, as
opposed to last year's Grade Ten camp, there were more working sessions than free time.
However, I walked away feeling more enlightened by the sessions than my jumps on the
trampoline. Leadership is a focus that is particularly relevant because we enter matric
next year- the year when one's leadership skills are put to the test.
The session on leadership was given by Mrs. Harding, a perfect example of a good leader
...(despite any views to the contrary, I was not forced into saying this.) We outlined the
skills a leader needs, as well as many leadership positions available at Wynberg.
Other sessions included goal setting - a session which reminded us of the importance of
prioritising and the recognition of the fact that 'the journey of a thousand miles begins
with a single step'. We also had sessions on effective time management, which we have
found we are in great need of, as well as etiquette, where we had to write our own
obituary.
One of the sessions which was great fun and where our organisational skills were put to
the test was the Talent Show. We had been told before their camp that they would have to
produce a grade talent show in which every group/chalet had to present an item. And so
practices were held before and during camp, as each group hurried to create and finish
items based on the theme: Showbiz: The Movies.
The night arrived on the 27 February 2003. The whole grade piled into an open-air theatre
at sunset, anxious and excited at the prospect of performing in front of so many people.
After a long search for the light switch to flood the stage with lights, the performances
began; showing off the Grade Elevens many many talents.
Most groups performed plays, however, there were a few dance routines and songs. All
pieces were brilliantly performed and written and all were very well received by the
audience.
The awards handed out were as follows:
Best Play Award Group Maureen
Best Actress Award Elle Shortall
Singing Awards Megan James,
Sweetness Ketelo, Lauren Losper, Mandy Sitole
The talent show provided a chance for everyone to experience performing in front of a
large crowd and in the end, much fun was had. A huge thank you must go out to all the
organisers of the talent show, especially to Ms Lawrence, Mrs Martin and Mr Lord; the
judges of the event.
The teachers put a lot of effort into our sessions and managed to keep us attentive and
intrigued. In all, it was very beneficial and worthwhile.
