Grade Seven Evening

By this time, most of the Grade Sevens of 2003, and the likely Matrics of 2008 have decided on the high school of their choice, and are in the process of preparing for the final tests which will enable them to move on into that school.

For those who chosen to attend Wynberg Girls' High, there was a special evening held for both them and their parents which may well have reminded them why they made the choice that they did. There was a rousing welcome from our marimba bands, a few of our Xhosa Society members and some of the members of the very active Music Department. One might have been forgiven for believing that entertainment by these girls was the sole point of the evening, given the reluctance with which our guests left them, but it was the intention of Mrs McCallum, Grade Eight Area Head, to offer to them a number of perspectives of the school.

Inside the hall, were the speakers of the evening where they would provide insight into the life of Wynberg from the perspective of a boarder, a day scholar, any one of the four pillars of the educational focus of the schools and an opportunity to think about and meet the teachers of the possible options that they might take in 2004.

Whether it was excitement … anxiety … fear … anticipation … readiness that was the dominant mood of the Grade Eights of 2004, all were encouraged to embrace actively and energetically the opportunities that are offered at a school such as Wynberg. They were reminded that the wealth of any school is dependent on the kind of partnership that is struck up between teacher, pupil and parent. They were reminded that they have five short years in which they are invited to join the action — to be doers — to allow the inspiring community that is Wynberg to challenge them, to guide them, to support their growth.

As the evening drew to an end in what is undoubtedly one of the favourite places in the school for our students - the tuckshop - the members of this fledgling partnership met over a cup of tea - the first of many connections that will take place between those who applied and were accepted as Wynberg Grade Eights of 2004, their parents and their teachers.
