2003 Formal Valedictory

The formal Valedictory Service is a ceremony that marks the changes in the lives of our Matriculants: it is one in which they are invited discover and measure their own growth through the seasons of their lives. Year in and year out, it catches both staff and girls by surprise as we reflect on the time that we have shared together and they look to the future for what it may bring.

They, as our honoured guests, and their parents were welcomed by Mrs Wilding, who drew a fine analogy between their school career and a river. There are times when music and song are so inspirational that they reach into your very centre. The singing of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” by the school choir was one such occasion: it is only the heartless who would not be profoundly moved. A particularly moving part of the ceremony this year was the handing over of the prefects badges: it marked the end of an era - not only for them, but for the position of prefect at Wynberg, as the school embraces an entirely new leadership system.

Alex Butterfield, the Head Girl for 2003, spoke to the matriculants for the final time as a pupil at the school and the Matriculants led out of the hall – for the last time.
