Sowing Seeds of
Goodwill on Arbor Day with Levana Primary

Mariette Fourie and Mrs Harding are seen here with
representatives of Levana Primary School
Wynberg Girls High is in the
fortunate position of having wonderful grounds, with a splendid garden and more than
enough trees. However, this did not prevent the motivated Environmental Club from
celebrating Arbor Day in 2001.
They recognised that in order to celebrate
Arbor Day there was no need to confine their thinking to their immediate community. They
had recently read of the success of Levana Primary School, led by their creative and
dedicated teacher, Fadia Abbas. She with some of her young pupils has established a
Water-Wise Garden in the rockery at their school in Lavender Hill and in so doing,
inspired others to develop the school grounds. In the article the primary school talked of
their need to raise funds for the plants that they would like to buy for their garden.
They talked of a desire to divide it into different sections: the flower garden, fragrance
garden and succulents.
It did not take long for our Wynberg girls to decide to hold a cake sale in order to
raise funds for this school in support of Arbor Day celebrations. The extraordinary
generosity of the school, and the motivation of the Environmental club enabled us to raise
over R900. On Thursday, 30 August, just a few days before the country was to celebrate
Arbor Week, we were delighted to hand this cheque to Levana Primary School in support of
their efforts. With Mariėtte and Mrs Harding are the Principal of the school, Gavin
Alkona, one of their teachers, Fatima Southgate and two of the pupils who have worked on
the garden, Crystal Hector and Randall Smith.
