Dream comes true for Wynberg Girl, Lunga Guma!

mvc-656s.jpg (90420 bytes)     mvc-657s.jpg (58829 bytes)

Lunga's Mother and brother were at Wynberg
to watch the advertisement being made.

On 4 November, Lunga's dream of singing in front of an audience of thousands came true when Musica's Christmas advertising campaign was first screened. But the filming of the ad took place long before that. Spotted at the schools' major production by Ross Chowles, Creative Director of Advertising for the Jupiter Room, she was immediately identified as one who could be an outstanding promoter of music for his client, Musica. What they wanted was the combination of raw talent and a story of courage - and it was Wynberg Girls', Lunga Guma, who fitted the bill. She was asked to audition for the advertisement, and quickly won the hearts of those who watched and listened to her.

Telling her story of how it was that she had been born with a brain tumour, and through various treatments overcome this, the advertisement tells her story and features her singing in the school hall. Unlike the Lunga that Wynberg knows in real life, the advertisment features her as a loner whose dreams they (Musica) hope will come true. It is with a wry smile that Lunga notes that the advertisement has made her dream a reality: she has indeed sung before an audience of thousands!

Beloved of her "sisters" in the hostel and her friends and teachers at the school, Lunga is a modest but vibrant Grade Eleven student, who is about to enter her final year of schooling. She is one of the prefects for 2002, and participates actively in the Arts and Cultural activities at the school. She wowed audiences in both the school's major production "The Wiz" and in a variety concert entitled "Night of the Stars" recently organised by the Grade Eleven students. Wynberg Girls' High too hopes that all of her dreams come true.

The Web Committee had fun following the film crew as they filmed her for the advertisement, and we bring you a photographic essay on "how the ad was made."

The Film Crew prepare to shoot scenes from the hostel - in the ad,
a lonely Lunga is seen walking down the corridor of Waterloo House - the school hostel.

Is there too little light? Or is it the battery?

We were also able to get some video footage of the filming

putting on make-up

take two...

and so it continued...
