Penny Glover's Extra Drama Group Some of you might ask "Why do extra drama, when every girl in the school has to attend drama at least once during the ten-day timetable?" Well, the answer is this: it's fun! It's an amazing educational experience, and it is enormously beneficial at a personal level. The classes are small, they happen once a week, and only those who really love the subject and are completely dedicated attend these classes. The extra drama classes are less formal and lend themselves to creative expression. Basic theatre techniques are taught, but mime, creative movement, voice and improvisation are the focus. Those who attend extra drama classes are encouraged to participate in the Cape Town Eisteddfods and those who are really serious about their drama enter into the Trinity College of London Exams and The South African Speech Teachers’ Guild exams. These girls are working towards teacher’s or performer’s diplomas. The extra drama lessons are fun. There is always much laughter, but often too we explore and express our emotions about the darker side of life. Drama is a lifeskill. It is during these sessions that we learn to empathise and identify with our fellow humans. Communication skills are improved and confidence is developed. We asked some of the girls who attend Ms Glover’s extra drama classes why they go and what it is that they enjoy and these are some of the comments we received: ..Ms G's taght me a lot about myself, and revealed that I had abilities which I as not conscious of... I like Ms G's teaching style. But one of the greatest things about drama is that it provides me with an opportunity to explore myself and my capabilities I have gained confidences and am learning to express myself in a multitude of ways. It's a great release for stress and tension: recognising the CRAZY and LOONY side of a teacher is a rare experience. |
