Physical Intelligence Workshop

On Thursday afternoon, 12 September, our Drama and Dance students were fortunate to attend a Physical Intelligence workshop facilitated by two members of Rhodes University's First Physical Theatre company. Founder of the company and now Artistic Director of the company, Professor Gary Gordon, Head of the Drama Department at Rhodes, described it as follows in 1997:

" The First Physical Theatre Company is a testament of action - a declaration of intent amongst artists working in South Africa. It teases together the dynamic elements of theatre ... dance, music, mime, design, voice, song and movement collide or come together in an atmosphere that is exhilarating and always illuminating. First Physical charts the course of our lives ... it has the power to heal and transform. It is a document ... an artistic document that reveals life in South Africa."

These were some of the images we were able to capture in this hour-long workshop.

In these clips you can see the class taking the first steps, learning a little more of the routine, following the master and then trying the dance on their own in small groups .
