Arts Festival - 2001

We have always known that, as a school, Wynberg is rich in talent. We have always suspected that, behind the doors of the music rooms, future Mozarts are practising their scales and that future Hollywood actors are rehearsing their lines in the hall. We have caught glimpses of this exceptional talent in the exhibitions, music concerts, dance eisteddfods, drama productions and Xhosa Society evenings throughout the year. Nevertheless, who could have predicted how magically all this talent would merge together on 5 April in our own, unique Arts Festival?

The evening began early for those involved in the setting up and decorating of the food stalls. Few got to see this behind-the-scenes effort, but it was only too evident in the final results.

Last minute stretches and rehearsings of lines were seen and caught on camera. Anxiously preparing, and awaiting their audiences, these were our performers.

The evening was magical - in the eyes of everyone. Not only was there an opportunity for the students to reveal their creativity and to practise what they had learnt in their lessons, they provided their audiences with an evening we will all remember.

The Xhosa Society enthralled us all with the sounds, rhythms and dance of Africa and they combined their talents with the Afrikaans department to celebrate Halala Africa. The Grade Eight (FR) thrilled audiences with their dance of joy, Bejuxuza Ngochulumanco

The Grade Elevens danced their way through Cheerleader moves - not a regular sight in Classical ballet - and audiences were invited to see a dance class in progress.

The fires of Africa were aflame at the South African stall and the sounds of France were echoed in the songs and poetry performed by the Grades Eight and Nine French Groups.

Audiences were given the opportunity to see experimental (dramatic) work in progress, Explore and Discover, by the Grade Ten Drama Group. Nikki Ramages explored poetry, prose and monologues, thematically linked by song - a piece entitled Love and Separation. Apart from these performances, dialogues and contemporary poetry were also performed.

The Afrikaans department decided to put their acting skills to the test in a poetic trip through District Six, as seen through the eyes of I.D. du Plessis and Uys Krige.

Music was made by the Recorder Ensemble, the Orchestra, the Jazz Combo and our Marimba Band. But many would agree that if some of the highlights of the evening had to be chosen, the choir would be one of those on the list. Bringing the evening to a close with Heroes and Dreams and The Rhythm of Life it would have been hard to distinguish their voices from those of angels!

There were numerous cultures and foods to experience. The exotic and colourful art work produced by the Grade Nines were to be found in the strangest places. It was a wonderful evening, and left all resolving, that this should become a tradition at Wynberg Girls' High!
